Thanks for the ride!

Since June 2008, I’ve been documenting and promoting Yellow Springs events through a variety of venues. For a town of only 3,500 people, there is an amazing (and often exhausting!) amount of art, creativity, and culture.

At this time, I need to refocus my energies. The blog will continue to serve as a resume of my work.

Thanks to all my readers for your support over the years and especially to all the individuals and businesses who have provided me with such a volume of work. It’s been a pleasure to serve the community in this way and to be able to answer the question, “What’s happening this weekend?”  It’s been a good run.

See you at the next wild and wooly event---

Sparkle to premiere at DAI

Local filmmakers and longtime supporters of the Little Art, Julia Reichert & Steve Bognar, are soon to premiere their new film, Sparkle. The evening will be quite unusual — a night of dance and movies.

Sparkle is the story of legendary dancer Sheri 'Sparkle' Williams, who at age 50 (!) is still dancing with the world-renowned Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. Their film is the story of how Sheri faces a devastating injury, which happened on stage.

November 2: A Premiere Evening! Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert's award-winning short Sparkle will be presented at the Dayton Art Institute as part of a fundraiser for the extraordinary Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.

The evening includes the local premiere of the short film, then Ms. Sheri 'Sparkle' Williams will perform a world premiere solo dance piece choreographed by Rodney K. Brown. The evening will conclude with a special performance by the entire Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.

This weekend's cheat sheet

Afterschool Chess with Mister Omar!

Afterschool Chess is coming back to the Elementary School! Last year’s Introduction of Chess in the Antioch School was a huge success! This year’s program will hopefully be expanding to include both Middle School and Elementary School in the Village for afterschool Chess Learning & Playing.

K-6 Grade Chess
Every Friday beginning November 2nd.
3:35-5:30pm

Founder of Mister Omar’s Chess Academy, I will bring my fun and accessible approach to seven after-school sessions of instructional chess designed for all students in Elementary School.  I will be selecting a team of bright minds to represent Us -- Yellow Springs -- in our yearly Chess Tournament -- The Queen City Classic. So come see if your child has what it takes to be a part of the YellowSprings Kings.

Chess will meet every Friday beginning November 2nd, 2012 from 3:35-5:30 pm for 7 weeks. Each two-hour session will include one hour of chess instruction and play, and one hour of snack, homework, board games and playground.  I need parent Volunteers -- 1 parent for 1 session -- so total help needed is 7 parent(s) for duration of class. The fee is $50. Scholarships are available.

I am still finalizing my location for the class.  After School Chess will either be @ the Presbyterian Church like last year or back @ the Library in Mills Lawn like 2 years ago.  I prefer the Library at Mills Lawn & am waiting for the green light to be back where I started - the good ol' library at Mills Lawn!

Contact Omar Durrani at durranio11@gmail.com for questions and to register.

Into the Dark Forest one-woman show

Into the Dark Forest performance
Friday, October 26, 2012, 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Casa de Paz 1315 Corry St., Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387

Into the Dark Forest is a 2-hour one-person show. But it is more than a show. Everyone present is creating a sacred space together, where I invite you on a journey. It's the journey of my heart unfolding in all its messiness, beauty, confusion and grace.

It's about how I, as a feeling woman, have navigated this contemporary cultural context. My sharing is in the form of original songs and spoken word pieces that I have written over the last 12 years. It weaves in and out of my real experiences, my dreamscape and my imagination. My ritual art has helped me to gather strength, compassion, and levity in the face of the places where I want to crumble into fear and denial.

This is an offering of deep heart to all who are on their healing journeys to reclaim their wholeness and embodied wisdom. May our hearts feel so nourished that we spontaneously blossom into our RADIANCE; Shining the light of who we are in all its messy BRILLIANCE!

This 10/26 performance is open to the public, and, for those registered, it is the beginning of the 1ST Annual Returning Home: A Red Tent Retreat for women. (See the event page "Returning Home: A Red Tent Retreat 1st Annual" on facebook for more info.)

To see video clips of the performance, go to my facebook page: Into The Dark Forest. For other questions, email me at IntoTheDarkForest@gmail.com

Red Tent Movie Screening at Little Art

Sunday, October 28, 2012 - noon
Little Art Theatre, 247 Xenia Avenue

Things We Don’t Talk About: Woman’s Stories from the Red Tent is a groundbreaking 72-minute documentary film by award winning filmmaker Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost, PhD. Spontaneous and organic, a Red Tent is a red textile space where women gather to rest, renew, and often share deep and powerful stories about their lives.

The Red Tent movement is changing the way that women interact and support each other by providing a place that honors and celebrates women, and by enabling open conversations about the things that women don’t want to talk about in other venues. Things We Don’t Talk About weaves together healing narratives from inside the Red Tent to shine a spotlight on this vital, emergent women’s tradition. The film provides us an opportunity to remember, to listen, to know, and to find what it is we need to bring back to our communities to help awaken the voices of women.

Admission: $5 – $10
Filmmaker Isadora Leidenfrost from Chicago will be present.

"ParaNorman" this weekend

“ParaNorman” at Little Art Theatre
Two opportunities this weekend to see this stop-motion animated comedy/thriller.

Saturday, October 20, 2012 (part of Yellow Springs Zombie Walk Weekend)
11:30 p.m.   ~~AND ~~

Sunday, October 21 at 3:00 PM

Little Art Theatre, 247 Xenia Avenue, Yellow Springs
Stop-Motion Animated Comedy/Thriller.  92 minutes.  PG.  2012

FUN FACT: Native Yellow Springer Aaron Matthews worked extensively on this film as a graphic artist.

When a small town comes under siege by zombies, who can it call? “Norman!” The animated comedy thriller ParaNorman is set in the town of Blithe Hollow, whose locals profit from mining the town’s history as the site, 300 years ago, of a famous witch hunt. Eleven-year-old Norman Babcock (voice of Kodi Smit-McPhee) is gifted with the ability to see and speak with the dead, such as his beloved grandmother (Elaine Stritch). Most days, he prefers their company to that of his flustered father (Jeff Garlin), spacey mother (Leslie Mann), and deeply superficial older sister Courtney (Anna Kendrick). Norman is unexpectedly contacted by his odd uncle Prenderghast (John Goodman), who floors him with the revelation that a centuries-old witch’s curse is real and is about to come true, and that only Norman will be able to stop it from going into overdrive and harming the townspeople.

“It’s freakishly funny, suddenly tender, gleefully macabre, genuinely scary, and full of a moral – fear turns weak people into bullies – which is dosed out so gently that it never tastes like medicine.”
—Charlotte Observer

Occupy the Economy: Challenging Capitalism

David Barsamian to speak at Little Art
Tuesday, October 23, 7 p.m. Free (donations appreciated)

Like that well known substance, Capitalism has hit the fan. Today's economic crisis is the most severe since the Great Depression. What are its root causes? The conventional explanations put the blame on greedy bankers who pawned off credit default swaps, sub-prime mortgages, and a smorgasbord of derivatives, on a hapless and helpless public. To make matters worse there was little or no regulation. So if we tinker with some reform measures, pass some legislation, a tax cut here, a little stimulus package there and everything will be hunky-dory. Will it? The seismic failures and problems plaguing Capitalism are systemic and deep. Many people are suffering. But not the upper crust. They are riding the gravy train to more riches. It is not a question of a few rotten apples. It is past time to examine the barrel that keeps producing the bad apples. Fundamental change is necessary to avoid future collapses.

David Barsamian is the award-winning director of Alternative Radio (www.alternativeradio.org) and author of many books. His latest is "Occupy the Economy: Challenging Capitalism" with Richard Wolff. One of America's most tireless and wide-ranging journalists, he has altered the independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio program and with his books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Arundhati Roy, and Edward Said.
