Clooney (and mashed potatoes) at the Movies

Villagers cleaned up real good for the "Clooney At the Movies" Auction Gala, Friday night, June 25, held at Antioch University Midwest as a benefit for the Little Art Theatre. The event included a silent auction, wine and buffet, video tribute by Julia Reichert and Steve Bognar, live auction, and journalist, author and guest speaker Nick Clooney addressing "The Movies That Changed Us." Jenny Cowperthwaite, Executive Director of the Little Art Theatre, was visibly moved by the outpouring of support for her "baby" which she has struggled to maintain for 38 years. Proceeds from the event will keep the theatre in operation as a non-profit venture. The highlight of the event was George Clooney's dad with the Mashed Potato Bar coming in a close second.

Artist reception at "Would you, could you"

Former Yellow Springs resident Laura Berch Carpenter, currently living in Colorado, came through town for her artist reception on Thursday, June 24, at "Would you, could you" In a Frame and to see family and friends. The artist is pictured chatting with reception guests Harvey Paige and Jane Brown.

A second "gallery" -- the side of a local barn -- is also displaying the artist's work at 1710 Spillan. Gallery hours are 7 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Yarn-bombers hit post office

Yarn-bombers Corrine Bayraktaroglu and Nancy Mellon "hit" a bench outside the Yellow Springs Post Office with their latest knit graffiti. The bench is dedicated to long-time villager Elaine Comegys who died in 2007. The mischievous yarn-bombers had previously decorated the bench to honor Comegys but the work needed to be replaced due to the harsh effects of the elements.

Sunny skies for local swap

Maxine's Annual Plant & Book Swap on Sunday, June 6th, attracted a wide variety of people, plants, snacks, books, and garden hats and helmets.

"Thank you to everyone for participating and I look forward to doing it again next year!" says Maxine Skuba, pictured in her green flowered hat and grateful for the cooperative weather following a steady and swap-unfriendly downpour.

Local author and swap participant Cheryl Meyer was thrilled to see her 2001 book, "Mothers Who Kill Their Children" on Skuba's used book table and happily signed it for an appreciative new owner. In a festive red hat and scarf on loan from the hostess, that's me sampling a tasty (and theme-appropriate) dandelion wine that was brought by another guest.

"Everybody went away happy," said Skuba of the event. A truckload of leftover books is being donated to the Planned Parenthood Annual Book Sale.
